What I'm Loving Now

I visited the North Fork of Long Island this weekend and stumbled across the amazing lavender farm at Lavender by the Bay in East Marion.  Definitely worth the trip to pick your own lavender but, if you cannot get there, you can also order products online from them at:  https://lavenderbythebay.com/

I would like to share some of the knowledge that I learned there with you because I think it is so fascinating...................

Benefits and Uses of Lavender and Lavandin Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is one of the most versatile essential oils. It is extracted from the lavender plant and carries a fresh, clean, calming, floral aroma. It has been used for thousands of years for its many benefits and can be used in a variety of ways for its healing properties to the mind and body. It is an exception to most essential oils and is safe to apply directly to the skin in its pure form.

At Lavender by the Bay, they steam distill freshly cut lavender right on their farm on Long Island. Then they bottle the essential oil, again on the farm, providing a 100% pure Lavender essential oil. They distill essential oil from both the Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) and Lavandin Super (Lavandin) plants.

The difference between these types of essential oil is that Lavandin naturally contains camphor whereas Lavender does not. This means that the smell of Lavandin is stronger and more pungent and is best used for its aromatic benefits. Lavender has a milder, sweeter smell that is best used for its calming benefits. Take a look at the list below for the top for ways to use both Lavender and Lavandin essential oil.

Benefits and Uses of Lavender Essential Oil

Relaxation
Lavender has long been used for its calming and relaxing benefits. To ease stress, anxiety or just to relax, inhale the oil by placing a drop on the palm of your hands, rubbing together, and placing your hands in a cupping motion over your nose while inhaling.

Disinfect mild burns, cuts, and acne
Lavender  is an antimicrobial and can be used on minor cuts, burns, and acne, disinfect and soothe the affected area. Apply a drop directly to the skin for relief. (It’s important to always use Lavender essential oil and not Lavandin when treating burns due to the camphor in Lavandin.)

     Promote better sleep
For trouble sleeping, Lavender can help relax the mind for ease of falling asleep and to promote longer and better rest. You can simply breathe in the aroma of oil and/or place a drop under your nose or behind your ears, for a milder sensation, before sleep.

     Headache Relief
Lavender helps to calm the mind and soothe tense muscles. For headache and migraine relief, massage a couple drops of oil into temples.

Benefits and Uses of Lavandin Essential Oil

Natural cleaning agent
Lavandin can be used as a natural cleaning agent for your home and body. It can be used to make DIY body and cleaning soaps. Use while cleaning in your home by placing a couple drops in your own cleaning products or in your body soap.

Insect Repellent
To naturally repel insects on your body or home, Lavandin essential oil can be used by rubbing drops directly on your skin or placing a few drops around your home.

Natural Perfume
Due to its strong, floral aroma, Lavandin has been used as perfume for thousands of years. Simply put a couple drops on your wrist, behind your ears, or any place on your skin.

Purify a room
To rid nasty smells or to purify an air space with the fresh, floral scent of Lavender, use an essential oil diffuser to diffuse the oil for a clean, pure space. If an essential oil diffuser isn’t available, boil a pot of water and add a couple drops of oil for a similar effect.

Keep in mind, essential oil is highly concentrated and should be used cautiously. Do not ingest essential oils and always test a small amount on your skin first. Keep out of reach from children and consult your doctor if using while pregnant or breast feeding.
