Old Wives' Tales? Yaass! 👍

I always believe in pursuing a natural, more holistic way of dealing with health issues.  So it’s time I share my favorite “old wives’ tales” that work for me.  These can absolutely assist with the challenges we face in this COVID environment.  The key is to stay on top of your symptoms and act swiftly.  Here we go:

Stuffy Ears/Earache

That feeling of fullness in your ears with an occasional ache can keep you up at night.  I take a QTip & dip one end in baby oil or virgin olive oil.  Then I heat that end with a very hot hair dryer and insert it deeply and gently in the ear canal.  After I have swiped a few times, I lay that QTip down and use the hair dryer full blast in the ear.  You may need to lower the temperature – but the real hot heat will do you good if you can tolerate it.  Then use the other end of that QTip and repeat for the other ear. I guarantee the discomfort will disappear immediately.

Neti Pot

A neti pot is a container designed to rinse debris or mucus from your nasal cavity. You might use a neti pot to treat symptoms of nasal allergies, sinus problems or colds. If you choose to make your own saltwater solution, it is important to use bottled water that has been distilled or sterilized.  Typically, to use the neti pot or other nasal irrigation device, mix 3 teaspoons of iodide-free, preservative-free salt with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and store in a small clean container. Mix 1 teaspoon of this mixture in 8 ounces of distilled, sterile or previously boiled and cooled water.  You can also buy this salt mixture in a health food store or an organic market.  If you experience burning or stinging, cut the amounts of dry ingredients to make a weaker solution. Once you've filled the neti pot, tilt your head over the sink at about a 45-degree angle. Place the spout into your top nostril, and gently pour the saline solution into that nostril.  The fluid will flow through your nasal cavity and out the other nostril. It may also run into your throat. If this occurs, just spit it out. Blow your nose to get rid of any remaining liquid, then refill the neti pot and repeat the process on the other nostril.  It is very important to cleanse and rinse the irrigation device after each use and leave it open to air dry.  If not, you could risk an infection.

Tea Tree Oil

Back to the QTip again - I coat one end with Tea Tree oil and swipe inside the nostril to dissolve a bump, pimple or boil that can suddenly appear in your nasal cavity from an infection.  I know this essential oil will completely eliminate it.  Repeat on the other nostril.  Tea Tree Oil is also an amazing fix for any infection situation such as mouth or canker sores, toothaches, cuts and abrasions.

Chest cold

This popular remedy was probably used on you as a child.  I take a plastic disposable glove and grab a few fingers of Vicks VapoRub that I slather all over my chest.  Don’t forget the sides of the throat and, after you apply it, cover the entire chest and throat with a flannel cloth.  I use an old flannel pajama top and cut it off just below the shoulder area.  The flannel helps maintain the warmth around the chest and encourages the Vicks to sink in.  Make sure you pin the top closed around the throat to trap the heat.  Get a good night’s rest and you should be good to go when you wake up in the morning.

Garlic/Echinacea

These herbs are masterful in combating a general feeling of unwell:  fatigue, aches, pains, feverish, sore throat and headache that accompanies flulike symptoms.  My remedy is fast and furious:  1 Echinacea capsule and 4 odorless garlic capsules every 4 hours for 24 hours.   That large dose kicks whatever is ailing you right out of your body in that time period.  Although I doubt you would need to do it, you could repeat for another 24 hours.  This remedy is powerful and effective.

Chicken Soup

Although not on my radar, I am sure this comforting meal in a bowl will go down easy and soothe the throat and the stomach.  The protein from the chicken boosts the immune system – totally necessary in our COVID defense.  If nothing else, it’s good for the soul, right?

Listerine

I still think this is a sleeper product for banishing sore throats.  When you get that scratchy, sore throat that is threatening to travel to the ears, pick one side and gargle as low as you can.  Repeat a few times on each side until you sense some clearing.  Take note, as well, as to what is exiting your body!  You can usually get rid of your throat/ear infection rather quickly.  You can repeat a few times on each side every couple of hours until the discomfort passes.

Hopefully, you will try a few of these if the need arises.  The natural way is a little more tedious than taking pills the Doctor orders but it is always the most effective!  Good luck 😊
