3 Easy Steps to Relieve Stress in the Workplace #WhyWeLoveThisMan

Yogi Cameron would never agree to be my roommate.  I eat meat occasionally and I sleep in a bed (horrors!).  All kidding aside, he is a vegan (of course) and sleeps on the floor (ouch!).  We still love him anyway.  This week Yogi C. has opted to give us some really helpful hints about stress relief. Let’s see what his words of wisdom are…………….

No matter the job we have, there will always be moments that are filled with stress. When we consider stress in relation to the Yogic path, we look at it as an emotional reaction to a situation. Something may happen that’s contrary to what we want—our boss yells at us, or we miss a deadline—and because we’re still attached to a different outcome, we feel bad. In response to this, the path teaches us to manage our reaction.

Sounds simple enough, right? But, as most of us know, managing something as complicated as human emotions is not only daunting but incredibly difficult. This is why it can help to use these three Yogic steps throughout the workday to lessen stress.

Step #1: Pause. No matter what is happening, take even just three seconds of silence before responding to a seemingly adverse situation.

Step #2: Take a full breath. Most of us respond to stress by holding our breath or breathing shallowly. This increases the intensity of our reaction. At moments of stress, breathe in for three counts and breathe out for six.

Step #3: Respond with empathy. Nobody wants to live their life through anger and aggression—but it happens all the same. If someone yells at you, simply begin your response with the words, “I understand.” This automatically places you both on the same wavelength—which is where they want to be in the first place.

Yogi Tip: Get Out of the Office…..No Matter What

Often, and particularly on busy days, we find it is best to work through our lunch break.  But working in an office or other workspace takes us away from nature enough as it is.  To resolve stress, be sure to get outside for even just a short walk before getting back to work:)
