Do Your Feet Hurt?

Shoes are responsible for most of the foot problems and deformities that doctors see in women.  As you get older, your feet get older too.  That means that the padding on the bottom of your foot gets thinner and your arches flatten.  When you wear high heels (and, yes, I love them too), your foot slides forward, the toes cramp, your weight is redistributed and your body is thrown out of whack.
High heels have also been associated with osteoarthritis of the knee, low back pain and ankle injuries.  Wear sensible shoes as much as you can and save those heels for special occasions.  High heels are simply not good for your feet or the rest of you.  If you love them and want to wear them, make sure not to wear them for hours and hours at a stretch; change into more comfortable and safer shoes often.  Also, if you wear narrow shoes, your toes will suffer from being squeezed into the tips.  Fashion can lead to corns and calluses, toenail problems, bunions, problems with your Achilles tendons, joint pain in your foot and stress fractures, which are tiny cracks in a foot bone. Ouch!!!

Take Care of Your Toes:  Some Tips for Pedicure Safety

You don’t want to leave the salon with more than you came in with, such as an infection, a fungus or worse!  So to be safe:

  • Make sure your establishment has a state license on display.
  • Make sure your technician has her personal license on display.
  • Check out the process used for disinfecting equipment.  If someone resents the question, take your business elsewhere!
  • Don’t shave your legs before a pedicure.  Doing so increases your risk of infection because small nicks can allow bacteria to enter the skin.
  • Last but not least, bring your own equipment.
