All About Posture

Your mother probably told you “Don’t slouch.”  Your mother was right.

New research has found that bad posture may be an indicator that a person will need nursing home care or become dependent on home assistance for their daily needs.  While researchers noted that the spine tends to compress as we age, maintaining good spinal posture “allowed the aged to maintain independent lives.” The Japanese study, which pulled its data from spinal posture measurements of more than 800 adults 65 and older, was published in April in the Journals of Gerontology Series A.

Worried that you are beginning to stoop and droop when you walk?  Keep your chin up……literally.  The spine tends to go where you are looking (makes sense, right?).  Practicing good posture techniques can keep you on the straight and narrow.  To see a video on “10 Daily Posture Exercises for Seniors,” go to bit.ly/youtube-seniorposture

Many thanks to Doreen H. for keeping us all upright:)
