Kale Sprouts
Unlike most people, I do love Brussels
sprouts. So kale sprouts were not a big
departure for me. The kale sprout is a
cross between the two. They are often
referred to by their other name, lollipop kale – downplaying the Brussels
sprouts side altogether. They grow off the sides of long, vertical stalks –
exactly like Brussels sprouts.
The kale sprout taste is almost exactly
halfway between kale and Brussels sprouts. I think the way you prepare them has
a lot to do with whether or not you will like them (same as Brussels sprouts). Pictured is the Trader Joe’s brand which is
awesome. I just rinse them through with
water and line them on a cookie tray, sprinkle with a tablespoon or two of EVOO (Extra
Virgin Olive Oil) and roast them in the oven.
During the cooking time of 20 minutes, I usually toss them twice. The tossing helps them to cook more
evenly. You will find that the longer
you roast them, the better they will taste.
They are perfect when they get to that crispy/crunchy stage.
They are a wonderful accompaniment to
meats and poultry but also great to pop in your mouth for a snack. Even if you are watching your fat intake, the
EVOO is a healthy way to enhance these beauties. So don’t shy away from that. It enriches the flavor of the kale sprouts. Enjoy!
